With this CD, Kaumakaiwa comes into her own artistic voice, even as she includes songs composed by her great-grandmother and grandmothers. Her deep knowledge of Hawai‘i, of Hawaiian language and culture, and her embrace of western-style melodies, make her a unique voice in Hawai‘i that summons the energy of old styles into songs for today.
In her second CD, with a title that refers to ancestral memory, Kaumakaiwa pays tribute to her ancestry in original mele (songs) and chants (‘oli) that pay tribute to Pele, to the places that have been significant to her and her family’s history, and to her grandmother Pua Kanaka‘ole Kanahele.
Ha‘i Kupuna (2003)
The debut CD of Kaumakaiwa Kanaka ‘ole launches a vocalist with the range and sensibility of one deeply rooted in her Hawaiian and hula culture within the context of a western world.
