Maui On My Mind (2010)
2011 Grammy Nominee! Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award: Slack Key Album of the Year
Presents a vibrant array of new compositions for the island of Maui and its people. Jeff draws on his roots from traditional slack key guitar, then reaches far beyond to reveal the Maui of yesterday and today. From the Paniolo town of Makawao to the depths of the Pu’u Kukui rainforest in the West Maui Mountains, Maui is revealed in these solo instrumental guitar pieces. New arrangements of classic songs include Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and Glen Miller’s “In The Mood.” Jeff combines innovative technique with traditional Hawaiian style that has allowed him to emerge as a leader among a new generation of slack key guitarists.

Pure Slack Key flows like the rolling tides that touch the shores of the Hawaiian Islands. From the roots of a tradition that spans nearly two centuries to the voice of a new generation, Jeff Peterson's music tells the stories that make Hawaii a true paradise. Relaxing, nahenahe sound lift the spirit and invigorate the soul. Slack Key guitar was born in the 1830s on the island of Hawaii when King Kamehameha III brought in Mexican and Spanish cowboys to teach the Hawaiians the art of ranching. These visiting cowboys enjoyed playing the guitar and introduced the instrument to the people they met. Soon the guitar became very popular in the islands and a new style of playing developed as the Hawaiians added their spirit of aloha to the instrument and experimented with different tunings.

Jeff’s signature sound combines innovative technique with traditional Hawaiian style and has allowed him to emerge as a leader among a new generation of slack key guitarists. This CD represents some of the favorites in slack key guitar, alongside original compositions.

Slack Key Jazz: Slack key guitar was born in the 1830s when Hawaiian cowboys introduced innovative sounds by changing traditional guitar tunings. Later in the 1920's and 30's, the strains of the swing era swept across the Pacific and reached the shores of Waikiki. On this recording, Jeff Peterson, an artist featured on the fist ever Grammy-Award Winning recording for Best Hawaiian Music Album, reinterprets many of the finest jazz standards with slack key stylings, adds the sophistication of swing to Hawaiian classics, and offers imaginative original compositions. The result is an inspired and diverse expression of the spirit of aloha unique to the islands and people of Hawaii.

Kahealani: The debut solo recording by Jeff Peterson featuring the song "Kahealani" from the first ever Grammy-winning recording in the Best Hawaiian Music Album category. Beautifully recorded performances of original and traditional slack key guitar in addition to classical pieces by Andrew York and Roland Dyens. Haiku: The most recent recording by the shakuhachi and guitar duo features traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music beautifully arranged with multiple flutes, guitars, and the addition of acoustic bass. The sound is fresh and inspired, moving their style further ahead into new musical territories--without losing sight of the traditions that first brought them together.

Bamboo Slack Key: Pure. Natural. This music moves as surely as a plant grows. In an inspired pairing, Shakuhachi Grand Master Riley Lee and ki ho'alu guitarist Jeff Peterson take us on an evocative journey through the most remote areas of an unforgettable island, Maui.
