Maisey Rika

"Heartfelt music and song showcasing what I believe to be one of the most arresting and beautiful voices to emerge from New Zealand, ever." --Paul Mclaney of Mushroom Music

Maori singer/songwriter Maisey Rika, has one of Aotearoa's (New Zealand's) most impressive voices, creating music that fuses cultural roots, memorable tunes, and honest, often haunting lyrics.

For her most recent CD release, Maisey swept the Māori Music Awards with 4 wins, adding to her 9 Māori Music Awards for her previous two albums. Her all Maori-language Whitiora won the award for Best Māori Language Album at the 2013 Vodaphone New Zealand Music Awards.

Some have described her sound as similar to Tracey Chapman or Sade, with a splash of India.Arie. Her stunning vocals and fusion of English and Maori (Te Reo) lyrics is capturing the hearts of soul seekers both in New Zealand and abroad. In 2010, she swept the Maori Music Awards with 4 wins: Best Maori Pop Album   (for 'Tohu'), Best Maori Female Artist (for the second time), Best Maori Song (for 'Nia'), and Best Maori Songwriter of the year.

For her 2013 award-winning CD Whitiora
(5 Maori Music Awards),
Maisey returned to Te Reo Maori (Maori language) in original songs and new collaborations. Maisey and her brother, guitarist J.J, continue to evolve their melodic blend of soul, folk, acoustic, and R&B, a musical palette vibrant with elements of roots and deep culture. And her newest CD Tira just won 4 Maori Music Awards in 2017.

Her original songs explore universal emotions of hardship, happiness, love, justice and sorrow, as she tackles such themes as domestic violence and Maori displacement. Her music traverses various styles as well, including the ancestral sounds of traditional Maori instruments alongside energetic guitars, drums, animated horn sections and pure string sections. Her strong heritage, eclectic songs, and her honey-smooth vocals are quickly traveling around the world, from Aotearoa shores into international hearts.

Hailing from New Zealand, this singer/songwriter has a powerful, majestic voice that captivates audiences worldwide.  Maisey began singing professionally at 13 years old. Her first recordings brought her to national stardom with “E Hine”, a classic collection of Maori traditional songs, that went double platinum and won “Best Maori Language Album” at the New Zealand Music Awards. Maisey was nominated for “Best Female Vocalist” in 1998 at age 15. Since then she has toured as a lead vocalist with her traditional Maori song and dance Kapa haka group, performing in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia and Australia.

She made her U.S. debut in March 2011, touring Hawai‘i with Hawaiian Grammy-winner George Kahumoku Jr. to great acclaim and appeals to bring her back; she returned to sold-out shows across the state in 2015. She has performed at WOMAD Taranaki as well as AWME, the Australian World Music Expo, and opened for the New Zealand band Katchafire on their Australian tour in 2011, and in 2013, she was featured at Sounds Aotearoa, New Zealand’s indigenous music expo, and opened for India.Arie in Auckland in 2014. She also toured internationally with Barefoot Divas, six leading indigenous singers from Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.
